The Commission for Taxi Regulation believes that a lower drink drive limit should be welcomed in the context of the Small Public Service Vehicle industry.
The Commission for Taxi Regulation and Road Safety Authority today launched a joint campaign targeted at members of the Small Public Service Vehicle Industry to highlight the dangers of driver fatigue. The radio campaign on national and local radio along with print advertising will remind drivers of taxis, hackneys and limousines of the risks they run if they are driving while tired as well as their legal obligations in relation to the number of hours they drive.
The Commission for Taxi Regulation has today announced the next stage of reforms for the small public service vehicle (SPSV) industry following its most recent public consultation process. The Commission sought and received advice on the reforms from the Advisory Council to the Commission and completed Regulatory Impact Assessment and legal considerations on the reforms which will be implemented on a phased basis, between now and 2012.

The Commission for Taxi Regulation has today launched a new Driver Skills Development Programme for the Small Public Service Vehicle Industry. The programme will be mandatory for all new entrants and Dispatch Operators with immediate effect and rolled out to existing drivers on a phased basis.
The first phase of the public consultation process on the recommendations of the Goodbody Economic Review of the Industry concluded on May 5th 2009. The Commission will now be embarking on a number of meetings nationwide with key stakeholders including industry representatives.
Following the completion of these meetings, the Commission will analyse the feedback from the entire process and will make public its conclusions in due course.
The Commission cannot condone any protest which causes inconvenience to potential customers or other road users. It also expects those taking part to respect the right of drivers who wish to continue to work.
Whilst the Commission accepts that members of the industry have a right to express their views in this manner, it cannot and will not, be influenced by such action. Recent and planned future industrial action is counterproductive and succeeds only in giving a negative impression of the industry to consumers and causing drivers and operators to lose income.
The Commission for Taxi Regulation is now inviting submissions from service providers, service users, key stakeholders and any other interested parties on the recommendations of the Economic Review of the SPSV industry carried out by Goodbody Economic Consultants earlier this month.
Independent economic review of the SPSV industry carried out by Goodbody Economic Consultants was published today. A significant and comprehensive study that highlights the many changes since liberalisation of the market in 2000.
